Before & After: Cambridge Bathroom Renovation
Today I am sharing with you a client’s bathroom renovation with a shower remodel in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The goal of designing this bathroom renovation for a professional couple with young children living in the Boston MA area, was to transform drab, dreary, dated bathroom into a bright, modern, fun, happy space.
These clients wanted to do a relatively budget-friendly bathroom transformation but wanted it to look great, have a timeless look with a fun vibe, chic patterns, and go a little bold to let their personality shine.
They knew they needed to turn to the artistic eye and guidance of an experienced decorator in order to achieve the beautiful, layered result they were going for in the redesign of their bathroom.
My One Room Design service was the perfect answer to this couple’s bathroom renovation.
They weren’t looking to hire a white glove, full-service, luxury interior design firm with a team out of Boston, but rather work with a top expert decorator who would develop the new overall design concept for their new bathroom and provide them with a great plan that included the careful selection of materials and fixtures with thoughtful attention to detail to elevate the space.
Here are photos of our client’s bathroom before they hired Lisa Jensen Interior Design.

BATHROOM RENOVATION DESIGN CONCEPT
My first assessment when meeting my clients and seeing their existing neutral bathroom with beige and white tiles, greige wall paint, orange yellow maple vanity cabinets, chrome sconces, chrome faucets and chrome fixtures, was that the room needed a serious facelift to create a light, bright, colorful and modern bathroom with style.
My second assessment was that to save money and time from undertaking a costly bathroom remodel, we should work with the existing footprint, keeping the plumbing and electrical in the same place which is a major cost savings and only remove the 3/4 shower wall to open up the shower, connect the shower with the room, and thus create the illusion of a larger bathroom.
My third assessment was my clients were busy professionals raising young children, living in the city, and would need their bathroom to become a true sanctuary of the home, a space where they could get peace, find privacy, and hopefully relax in the hectic demands of their personal and professional lives.
BATHROOM RENOVATION DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
An essential part of my design process is thoughtfully pairing elements and finishes that are cohesive but never matchy-match from the same set, or same line, or even the same vendor.
I prefer to mix it up and create a little tension with the design this way, so the result doesn’t look cookie cutter.
I intentionally source interesting products that deviate slightly from the current trends and styles and when paired with one another will make a statement that has high impact in the overall bathroom design.
For example, in this bathroom design project I sourced thin black framed rectangular mirrors and paired them with round aged brass and glass wall sconces, a play on colors, finishes, and shapes.
Part of my design process when considering products to specify for a client’s Luxe-Look One Room Design plan is to ensure each individual product I source for a bathroom is damp rated to be safe for use in wet and steamy environment such as a bathroom, such as the sconces and mirrors in this project.
Whether a bathroom design calls for unlacquered brass, brushed gold, antique gold or aged brass finish, it is okay to mix metals in the same space when done correctly in the right doses like the black and gold metals I paired together for these Massachusetts clients.
For this project I wanted to create depth and add texture in the client’s bathroom by combining materials and finishes, playing on contrasts of light and dark, pairing a marble look quartz with navy blue cabinetry, and using unlacquered and aged brass instead of nickel and chrome tones.
BATHROOM INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS
Another part of my design process is to consider the flooring in a bathroom as one of the most important design elements in a project.
Bathroom floors need to be safe for the slippery, wet environment they are, but also be beautiful and fitting with the entire new room design, whether they are a porcelain tile, ceramic tile, or luxury vinyl tile.
My goal for the flooring I source for my One Room Designs, is to also conceal things typically seen on a bathroom floor such as dirt, dust, hair, lint and water droplets.
I intentionally and commonly use a patterned tile for a bathroom to help mask the debris, such as the encaustic tile I used on this project.
In order to be safe to stand on in the shower, to pair well with the encaustic tile, to add an element of playfulness, and to incorporate fun textures into the space, I sourced a patterned geometric shower floor tile for this particular bathroom design.
I also love taking a simple tile such as an elongated white subway tile, and instead of installing it in the typical subway installation pattern, doing a more interesting pattern such as the herringbone installation I did on the shower walls in this Cambridge renovation.
A herringbone pattern is a splurge however, as there is more tile waste and a lot more time involved in the installation, but when clients are up for it, the result is stunning and can easily be in the running as the center of attention in a room.

The increase of bathroom renovation, remodel and redesign projects I’ve been hired for, is likely a direct reflection of how clients have put a greater emphasis on self-care in recent years. With all the mayhem in today’s world and environment, clients who have the means to treat themselves to the luxury of a much-deserved bathroom design makeover could benefit with a new beautifully styled space to come home to after a long day of work, and to escape the family for a private moment…there is no better feeling.
